Keeping Otley Clean

Otley Town Caretaker

We have provided 50% funding towards additional street cleaning in the town since 2017 which has enabled Otley Council to employ a dedicated Otley Town Caretaker.

Our current Caretaker works 4 days per week (Mon, Wed, Thu and Sun) from 6pm – 8pm. His duties are in addition to that already undertaken by the LCC street cleaners. This includes general cleaning around the Market Place, throughout the town centre and surrounding areas, predominantly where there are shops and businesses. The removal of any debris from the weekly markets, unsightly weeds and other greenery which has been left to spread over paths and sometimes make them slippy and unsafe in wet weather, cleaning the seating and flooring under The Buttercross so that it’s a nice place to sit, have a drink and watch the world go by. He also cleans up unsightly dog mess and the remnants of a busy Saturday night in Otley.

Say ‘hello’ to him if you see him around, his presence has already made a massive improvement to our town. Any suggestions on work needing doing should be emailed to Otley Town Council admin@otleytowncouncil.gov.uk

Clean Up Otley Projects

In addition to the above, in 2019 our BID Champion, Tim Wilkinson, undertook an assessment of signage around the town. This led to the process of cleaning, de-cluttering and removing signage which had been left to deteriorate and look unsightly, with our “Clean Up Otley” Project. This included:

  • Cleaning the Welcome to Otley style signage on the routes into the town, to make them readable and more attractive to our visitors.
  • Making visible the directional signage on the outskirts of the town by cutting down overhanging trees and bushes.
  • Requesting the removal of historic excess signage from Leeds City Council, for example ‘New Road Layout’ signage which was out of date.
  • Removing street litter which has built up over the months.

We continue to monitor the above, however, if you see anything that you think we can improve please email tim.wilkinson@otleybid.co.uk, alternatively if you see any old posters littering our streets please remove and dispose of them in the appropriate way – together we can do so much to keep our town looking spotless and inviting for all.
